Defence policy blamed for job losses
5 Feb 12
(3 Feb 12) A FEDERAL Labor MP has blamed the Gillard government defence policy for contributing to the loss of 50 jobs at a major regional supplier. Mr Gibbons described the Defence Materiel Organisation as the "most frustrating organisation I've ever had to deal with".

Labor has forefeited the chance to shape future of defence
5 Feb 12
(4 Feb 12) ... Just look at the way it's thrown away the chance to mould the Defence Force. Normally the waters of Sydney Harbour sparkle in January's shimmering sunlight. This week sheets of rain greeted arrivals at the navy's Seapower conference. It was symptomatic of a broader mood hanging over the service. There's a sense of drift. Too many questions linger over the future. The latest Defence white paper handed a - or perhaps that should be the - critical role in deterring an attacker to the new submarine. Possessing enough range to operate in the South China Sea and armed with enough missiles to threaten any potential aggressor, the submarine was to be the foundation of our strategy. The other, critical, assumption behind the reasoning was that it would be built here. It would keep the South Australian industrial sector alive and provide technical and business spin-offs. IT has been a hectic first week for the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment, which has not only completed a move of logistical and historical significance but has almost immediately begun pre-deployment training ahead of a tour of Afghanistan. About 750 soldiers and their families, 1500 people in total, have moved, mainly from Sydney, where the battalion has been based for two decades, to the unit's new home at Lavarack Barracks. This is the first time all three original Royal Australian Regiment Battalions have been in the same location since they were raised after World War II.

Australian Defence Force accused of cover-up over Lance Corporal Jared MacKinney's death in Afghanistan
3 Feb 12
THE Australian military has been accused of a cover-up over the death in Afghanistan of Lance Corporal Jared MacKinney, with the federal opposition demanding an independent inquiry into the 2010 battle in which he died. A damning email from one of Lance Corporal MacKinney's 6 Battalion mates, who fought in the battle that day, slammed the lack of support and poor intelligence, but an internal inquiry released yesterday found there was no lack of support for the troops and no command problems. Claims that Australian troops in Afghanistan were not properly supported during a major battle in which one soldier was killed are untrue, an inquiry has determined. Lance Corporal Jared MacKinney, 28, died in an intense firefight with Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan in August 2010. Another 6th Battalion soldier subsequently told a friend in an email that was leaked to the media that it was a miracle that more Australians did not die in the battle.

AS he boarded a plane to Bangkok yesterday, you could hear the relief in the voice of Paul Dibb. "It's about bloody time," said the defence expert who in the 1980s spearheaded the landmark decision to move large chunks of the Australian Defence Force to Australia's north. "For the past 10 years Defence has been preoccupied with Iraq and Afghanistan and we've taken our eye off the ball here in Australia. "We will have resources-related investment over the next 30 or 40 years of some $500 billion in (the north), yet this is the most sparsely populated part of the country," Dibb said.

Report calls for a strengthening of defence bases in Australia's north
31 Jan 12
(30 Jan 12) THE Australian Defence Force needs to increase its presence and visibility across Australia's north to meet rapidly changing strategic developments in the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean, a key report has warned. A progress report on the government's Force Posture Review, ordered last year by Defence Minister Stephen Smith, also calls for a second naval fleet base to be built on the east coast. Brisbane has been named as a possible site to supplement the current fleet base in Sydney.

Defence forces battle mining boom
31 Jan 12
MARK COLVIN: An expert panel has confirmed what many in the defence forces have been saying for some time, that the mining boom is hurting them. Their report says the cash-strapped Defence Department will struggle to compete against rich resources companies in the battle for skilled workers and access to infrastructure. Instead, the defence of Australia's north may have to be conducted by forces which also fly-in and fly-out, or in the case of the navy: sail in and sail out.

JANUARY is always a significant time for the extended family that is the Australian Defence Force. For many it marks the anniversary of their enlistment, when they began the roller-coaster ride that characterises military service. Because the ADF's training and posting cycle generally follows the calendar year, January is also the month when hundreds of removal vans disgorge household effects that have been packed, often not for the first time, and delivered to a new location.

Tunnel back in time: Revealed after 67 years, the passage used in Great Escape
14 Jan 12

Despite huge interest in the subject, encouraged by the film starring Steve McQueen, the tunnel remained undisturbed over the decades because it was behind the Iron Curtain and the Soviet authorities had no interest in its significance.

Obama wants a lean, mean military machine

PRESIDENT Barack Obama has unveiled a strategy for a leaner US military focused on countering China's rising power while signalling a shift away from large ground wars against insurgents. The plan calls for preparing for possible challenges from Iran and China with air and naval power while downplaying any future massive counter-insurgency campaigns like those in Iraq and Afghanistan.
